Fireman Access

Even though our high-voltage batteries are designed to ensure that they are not deteriorated by any intrinsic cause, a fire caused by external reasons is always possible. If a fire spreads to the battery, the Fireman Access – a Renault innovation – points to the heart of the battery where firefighters can direct the fire hoses. Response times are therefore reduced from several hours to five minutes!

SD Switch

The “SD Switch” immediately disconnects the battery from the high-voltage network.

in safety, cutting-edge vehicles

In 50 years, Renault has helped divide by 5 the number of victims on the roads. To continuously improve everybody’s safety, the experts from the LAB (Accidents and Biomechanics Laboratory) and the 600 engineers and technicians innovate relentlessly. In total, over 2,000 patents have been filed and a range of cutting-edge technological solutions like Fireman Access and the SD Switch have been developed.

TIME FIGHTERS: THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN
RENAULT AND THE FIRE SERVICE

The goal is to make their work in the field easier in the event of
an accident and to make it as safe as possible.

a unique partnership since 2010

Developed between Renault and the emergency services, the aim of the initiative is to help firefighters save time and stay safe on call-outs and therefore save more lives.

The only car manufacturer in the world to have appointed a full-time Lieutenant-Colonel firefighter, Renault has been regularly training first responders for a number of years, in several countries, to deal with the latest generation of vehicles in its range.

training courses offered

What type pf training is given?

The training courses use real vehicles, in real-life conditions such as fires, extrication, underwater rescues, and more.
Theoretical and practical training is given and courses can last several days. Regular communication also keeps the emergency services abreast of any innovations that may affect them.

training on real vehicles

Renault has given 4,000 new vehicles to the fire service. These include latest-generation electric and hybrid models so that firefighters can become acquainted with the latest technology.

passenger extrication

Vital training on how to cut passengers free helps firefighters save time and work more efficiently. It also teaches them how to use QRescue, which gives them instant access to technical information about the vehicle involved in the accident. The car manufacturer and the fire service take part in annual extrication challenges in France, as well as in the World Rescue Challenge, once again using the latest vehicles provided.

extinguishing a burning vehicle

Did you know that Renault has invented the only protocol to extinguish electric battery fires caused by external sources? Despite what many people think, high-voltage batteries in our electric vehicles are very safe. However, acts of vandalism or a fire outbreak from the outside can lead to a fire on the inside. For this reason, real-life fire extinguishing training courses help drill First Responders to develop adapted actions and work quickly with Renault innovation, the Fireman Access.

ADVANCED DRIVER-ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

67% of drivers do not use driver-assistance systems unless
they are activated automatically(1) , Renault is therefore
working to reverse this trend.

(1) according to a 2019 SSHRC study

Advanced driver-assistance systems (adas) are intelligent systems that rely on advanced technologies (radars, software, cameras, etc.) to assist the driver on journeys.

Most adas work without human intervention, like the automatic emergency braking system (Pedestrian AEBS). New systems will soon herald the arrival of automated driving. Renault Group has been fitting its vehicles with driver-assistance systems for several years.

three types of adas for safe driving in any conditions

Advanced driver-assistance systems are divided into 3 categories: Safety, Driving and Parking.
Their purpose: to enhance user safety and comfort while reducing the risk of a serious accident.

safety

Intelligent driver-assistance systems analyse driving conditions, warn the driver of any risks and take action if danger is imminent.

driving

The various technologies make driving simpler and safer, for greater peace of mind.

parking

Parking aids make manoeuvring easy, enhance safety and protect your vehicle and your environment.

examples of Renault adas

safe exit of passengers

Your vehicle warns the driver when one of the passengers opens a door. A light in the rearview mirror and a visual and audible warning on the dashboard are triggered if there is a proven risk.

blind spot warning

Active above 15 km/h*, it warns the driver, via a signal in the rearview mirror, of the presence of vehicles that are not visible in his field of vision.

*or 30 km/h depending on the model

emergency brake assist

In the event of a head-on collision risk, the system warns drivers so that they can take appropriate emergency action. The system brakes automatically if drivers do not react despite the various alerts emitted.

360° around view camera

4 cameras reconstitute the environment of the vehicle in 360° so drivers can complete their manoeuvres safely.

emergency lane departure prevention

The vehicle corrects the trajectory automatically if it detects a possible collision.

RENAULT TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED WITH FIREFIGHTERS

Renault innovations to facilitate first responder intervention.

An electric vehicle is potentially less likely to catch fire than an internal combustion engine (fewer fluids, fewer highly flammable components, etc.). Renault electric vehicle batteries are extremely safe, which drastically reduces the risk of fire.

Launched in 2010, the collaboration between Renault and firefighters has developed over time. In particular, new technologies designed to make the work of first responders easier and shorten intervention times have emerged.

This collaboration has made the use of innovative systems (Fireman Access, QRescue by Renault) more widespread, making the work of firefighters easier and saving first responders and victims precious time in the event of an accident.

Fireman Access

Fireman Access in a nutshell

Even though the high-voltage batteries of Renault vehicles are designed to prevent fire outbreaks – during normal use and in the event of an accident – a fire started by external causes can spread to the battery. The Fireman Access can be used to extinguish it in a few minutes allowing firefighters to head straight to another call-out.

how does the Fireman Access work?

It is a safety system for flooding the battery of an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in the event of a fire. A metal rupture disk seals the battery throughout its life and ensures the watertightness required for everyday use. If a fire is started deliberately, it breaks under the pressure of a high-pressure jet of water directed by firefighters and allows water to reach the battery.

what are the benefits for firefighters?

Intervention times are reduced from several hours to ten minutes maximum. Saving water and time!

SD Switch

the SD Switch in a nutshell

The SD Switch is a mechanical switch that disconnects the battery from the electrical circuitry. Although our high-voltage batteries are designed to switch to electrical safety mode in the event of an accident, we recommend that firefighters use the SD Switch in the event of a violent impact to guarantee absolute electrical safety.

how does it work?

The SD Switch works like a fuse, applied to a voltage of 400 to 600 volts (compared to 230 volts in a domestic network). It disconnects the battery from the high-voltage electrical circuitry immediately.

what are the benefits for firefighters?

The SD Switch allows firefighters dealing with an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle to work in complete safety. Renault organises training courses for the emergency services on how to use it correctly.

Fix4sure

what is the Fix4sure solution?

Created by Renault, the “Fix4Sure” solution belongs to the list of so-called “passive safety” equipment. This device is based on a special seat frame design as well as a low position of the seat belt buckles. This prevents what is known as “submarining” in the event of a head-on collision, whereby the pelvis slides under the lap belt thus compromising the more delicate abdomen.

Isofix

The Isofix attachment method considerably reduces the risk of incorrect installation.

R-129 “i-size” standard, adapted to the size of the child

The R129 (or i-size) standard launched in July 2013 enhances the safety of children in cars by imposing the Isofix attachment system, classifying seats according to the size of the child rather than their weight, and extending the mandatory period for rearward-facing installation (15 months and 80 cm minimum). This standard will replace the R44 standard. Seats that comply with this new standard have been designed to protect against head-on and side impacts using latest generation dummies.

The 6 rules for installing a child in a car

To limit risks in the event of sudden braking or collision, it is important to respect the following 6 rules.

Never drive with a child on an adult’s knee. It is impossible to restrain the child in the event of sudden braking.

Each child must have their own seat in the car. One seat belt should not be used for two seats. Thus, each child should have an individual restraint system.

This system is particularly dangerous both for the adult and the child. A child must travel strapped into their car seat or on a booster seat.

There must be no space between the child’s body and the strap. Check that the strap is not behind or under the child’s arm and does not run along the armrests of the booster seat.

Restraint systems – seat, booster seat, straps – must be adapted to the size and morphology of each child. Solutions exist for every age, size and weight. Never seat the child on a cushion.

Avoid excessively thick clothes.

List of child restraint systems recommended by Renault Group:

Age  Height  Weight  Recommended child safety seat*
0-4 years  40-105 cm 0-17,5 kg Maxi Cosi Pearl 360 + Family Fix 360 Base
0-19 kg Joie Spin 360
3.5-12 years 100-150 cm 15-36 kg Britax Römer KIDIFIX i-SIZE**

*For more information and seat availability, consult the manufacturer’s website.

**We recommend using the Secure Guard, SICT and XP-pad lap belt when using a KIDIFIX I-Size system.

The 7 rules for fastening a seat belt correctly

Whether you are the driver or a passenger, wearing your seat belt is mandatory and vital for travelling in complete safety.

Never wear a coat! If you are wearing thick clothes, pass the seat belt underneath them.

Tilt it approximately 20° in relation to the vertical position.

Adjust it! The top of your head should be aligned with the top of the headrest.

You know the saying: “clunk, click, every trip”!

Adjust your seat for an optimal driving position, then adjust the height of your seat belt (strap in the middle of your shoulder).

Pull on the strap to eliminate any play and limit space between your body and the seat belt.

Check that the seat belt is positioned on the top of your thighs, not on your stomach. This reduces the risk of internal abdominal injuries in the event of a collision in which you slide under the belt.

personalised tips

The Safety Score analyses driving behaviour based on data from the vehicle’s sensors. Designed in partnership with French driving schools, it will soon give relevant advice to each driver based on four criteria:

  • Safe speed
  • Safe trajectory
  • Safe distance
  • Safe vigilance

The front camera detects speed signs: the information obtained is combined with that from local maps (via GPS).

The front camera detects road markings. The system then identifies – amongst other things – lane departures, as well as detecting lateral and longitudinal acceleration and providing information about driving style.

The distance between the vehicle and the one in front is measured by the front camera or the onboard sensors. The correct stopping distance is calculated instantaneously.

An interior camera (or steering wheel movement analysis) detects how alert or tired the driver is. A front camera records stops at stop signs and red lights.

safe coach

customised driving advice

The Safety Coach offers advice that takes into account the main risk indicators identified during driving. The idea is to encourage the driver to drive more safely.

risks visualised

By combining mapping and the navigation system, the driver will know in real time when they are approaching high-risk areas. This will make them drive more carefully.

The recommendations given to the driver will take into account the scores obtained from the safe speed, safe distance, safe trajectory and safe vigilance criteria.

For optimum efficiency, the advice issued by the Safety Coach will be highly practical. For example:

    • to boost the Safe Speed criterion,

      use the speed limiter

    • to optimise the Safe Vigilance criterion,

use the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Centering

The Safety Coach will go so far as to reward drivers who “play the game” by encouraging them, for example, to sign up for connected insurance offers, or to get discounts on partner products.
