Analysis of physical traffic accidents shows that in just over 90% of cases*, one of the causes may be a human factor: excessive or inappropriate speed; driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication; loss of concentration whilst driving.

We are developing a strategy of prevention and action to provide solutions and make travelling safer.

3 innovations to assist drivers

Our highly pragmatic approach is to put in place a kind of “guardian angel” to help drivers to drive more safely. There are three levels of action:

personalised tips

The Safety Score analyses driving behaviour based on data from the vehicle’s sensors. Designed in partnership with French driving schools, it will soon give relevant advice to each driver based on four criteria:

  • Safe speed
  • Safe trajectory
  • Safe distance
  • Safe vigilance

SAFE SPEED

The front camera detects speed signs: the information obtained is combined with that from local maps (via GPS).

SAFE TRAJECTORY

The front camera detects road markings. The system then identifies – amongst other things – lane departures, as well as detecting lateral and longitudinal acceleration and providing information about driving style.

SAFE DISTANCE

The distance between the vehicle and the one in front is measured by the front camera or the onboard sensors. The correct stopping distance is calculated instantaneously.

SAFE VIGILENCE

An interior camera (or steering wheel movement analysis) detects how alert or tired the driver is. A front camera records stops at stop signs and red lights.

The Safety Coach offers advice that takes into account the main risk indicators identified during driving. The idea is to encourage the driver to drive more safely.

By combining mapping and the navigation system, the driver will know in real time when they are approaching high-risk areas. This will make them drive more carefully.

COMBINED WITH THE SAFETY SCORE

The recommendations given to the driver will take into account the scores obtained from the safe speed, safe distance, safe trajectory and safe vigilance criteria.

DIFFERENT LEVELS OF RECOMMENDATION

For optimum efficiency, the advice issued by the Safety Coach will be highly practical. For example:

    • to boost the Safe Speed criterion,

      use the speed limiter

    • to optimise the Safe Vigilance criterion,

      use the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Centering

REWARDING DRIVERS

The Safety Coach will go so far as to reward drivers who “play the game” by encouraging them, for example, to sign up for connected insurance offers, or to get discounts on partner products.

ROADS, the new Renault Group driving simulator

Designed to develop and test ADAS and driverless systems, the ROADS simulator (Renault Operational Advanced Driving Simulator) is proving to be an excellent tool for optimising safety.

It lets you drive a digital twin and test all types of situations, including the most dangerous ones. It is a beneficial addition to time-consuming and costly road tests.

WHAT IS IT?

ROADS is a revolutionary driving simulator that is heralding a new era in immersive simulation. ROADS complements digital simulation and traditional tests, making it possible to test the behaviour and reactions of drivers faced with the growth of driver-assistance systems and in-car software, and the arrival in 2026 of the “Software Defined Vehicle”.

IMMERSIVE SIMULATION

taking simulation to the next level

ROADS is part of a specific simulation centre for smart and connected vehicles. The 2,300 m² site hosts many immersive test simulations focused on the design and validation of new vehicle projects. The extraordinary dimensions of ROADS with its 360° dome make it possible to test all of the safety components built into a full vehicle (ESP, emergency braking, behaviour, etc.). The data obtained will help to improve all of Renault Group’s production.

DIGITAL TWIN

digital twin: using the virtual to anticipate the real

A digital twin is the virtual equivalent of a real vehicle. It can be used to simulate behaviour in different traffic situations and check how well the driver-assistance systems work, before being fitted in the real vehicle. ROADS uses revolutionary technology.

As the ideal tool for testing a vehicle’s dynamic behaviour, the driver-assistance systems and all the driver information systems in all types of environments, ROADS represents a giant step forward in safety research.

PATENT ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

Fireman Access

Even though high-voltage batteries are designed not to cause any fire outbreaks, whether under normal use or in the event of an accident, a fire caused by external factors can spread to the battery. In such cases, this safety system, developed in collaboration with firefighters, enables rapid extinguishing by filling the battery with water.

The Fireman Access allows battery fires to be extinguished in less than 10 minutes, compared to an average of 4 hours for other manufacturers. This saves approximately 42,000 liters of water per intervention and, most importantly, crucial time for emergency responders.

Using the radar sensor, the system calculates the distance separating Renault Austral full hybrid E-Tech from the vehicle in front and alerts the driver if there is a risk of a front-end collision. The driver can then apply the brakes, but if the system still detects a risk of collision, the brake force is increased. If the driver fails to react, the system activates the brakes automatically.

When you turn left, the system calculates the distance between the Renault Austral full hybrid E-Tech and the vehicle you are passing and alerts the driver if there is a risk of a head-on collision. The driver can then brake the vehicle, but if the system still detects a risk of collision, the braking force is increased. If the driver fails to react, the system activates the brakes automatically.

Your vehicle will automatically brake if there is an obstacle behind your vehicle when reversing.

rear cross traffic alert

Be alerted in case of an approaching obstacle from the rear corner.

lane departure warning

Using a camera fixed on the windscreen behind the rearview mirror, the system detects if a continuous or broken line is accidentally crossed and warns the driver.

lane keeping assist

Activated from 70 kph, the system counter steers to bring your vehicle back into its lane if it crosses a continuous or broken line without using the indicators.

blind spot warning and lane departure prevention when overtaking

The vehicle warns you or corrects the trajectory automatically if it detects a possible collision when changing lanes.

safe exit of passengers

Your vehicle warns your passengers in case of danger when opening the door.

driver attention alert

The system will detect any loss of focus in your reactions and suggest you take a break from driving.
